Clary is a regular 15-year-old girl who happens to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. While at a dance club with her best friend Simon, she stumbles into finding Jace, Alec, and Isabelle. And that’s when her world turns upside down. Before she knows it, Clary’s mother, Jocelyn, disappears. Little did Clary know that Jocelyn had another life before her, making her wanted by another kind. The Shadowhunters. Heaven’s fallen angels that are in charge of keeping our own world demon-free. Jace, a Shadowhunter himself, explains to her how her mother has had a major role with them by being the only one that knows where the Mortal Cup, the one that can make a Shadowhunter out of a mere human, really is. But to find the Cup, they need to find Jocelyn, and to find Jocelyn, they need Clary to remember everything she knows on her mother as a Shadowhunter. The only problem is, Clary can’t remember.

The book itself is very well written, narrating from time to time what everyone thinks and does, and it has a lot of details. It makes you feel desperation when Clary last talks to her mother, wonder when you learn what Shadowhunters really are, and intrigue as to how they are going to find her mother.

I think that people who like science fiction and romance will definitely enjoy this book, due to the fact that it transports you to an alternate reality, where demons and underworlders roam the streets, though we can’t see them. The book let’s us see how Clary and Jace each start to change around themselves, making romance present, and it also tells us many things that are pretty weird when we think about finding them in our world. I definitely enjoyed it, and I can’t wait to read the second book.

Clary, in my point of view, is sort of nice and a little too good. Like, she doesn't really want to see a bad side to something just introduced to her, or on the contrary, wonders why it's so bad.
Jace, on the other hand, is the complete opposite. With his cold glares and hard expressions, you get to know that Jace has had a tough time, believing everything is what it is and not judging anybody else's intensions when they interfere with a job.
Alec, also analytical and somewhat logical, always tries to see the reason in things and tries to figure out how to solve a problem or maybe explain something in the easiest way.
Isabelle, by the way her appearance is described and by her cool personality, you can almost infer that she is a 'bad girl', always fighting for what she has a reason to.
What's also kind of different about them all is that they were each raised in different ways. As we see, Jace, Alec and Isabelle all are kind of cool against the world, where as Clary is much more innocent, having different problems than their own.

The main conflict in the book (at least where I am) is that Clary's mother, Jocelyn, is missing and Clary desperately wants to find her. But, while they're looking for clues, they also come to know that Valentine, a 'dead' and evil Shadowhunter that wanted to disrupt the order with all the creatures, is still alive and that he has Jocelyn. And, as he wasn't able to do it before he allegedly died, he now wants to complete the mission.
Now, Clary, Jace, Isabelle, Alec, and Professor Hodge must try to stop him.

The narrator is omniscient, meaning that it isn't a character in the story because it knows what they all think and do, not really from the point of view of anybody. It also never uses "I", which also gives a clue on why there isn't a specific character that narrates the whole story.

Clary is a regular girl up until the night she meets Jace. And when this happens, her whole world turns around.
Though she has her doubts that she even saw him in the Pandemonium Club in the first place, she soon knows she did when she goes out for coffee with her best friend, Simon. She sees him there again, as cool and relaxed as ever. He exits the small coffee shop, but intrigued, she follows him out, able to ask him a couple of questions.
But, the truth is, no one else could even see Jace. At least not like Clary. And even if she threatens to call the police because she says he's 'following' her, she has no proof whether they would see him or not.
And things get even more twisted once Clary's mom, Jocelyn, disappears. Yet, Clary still doesn't want to believe all the things Jace tells her. She doesn't want to believe in demons or in the fair folk, the marks, anything. She just wants to find her mother.
What she doesn't know is that she'll end up believing in them pretty soon.

The story takes place in New York City, a major cultural center that contributes a lot of diversity to it. You can find how the setting really was thought of since it needs a really big place to develop. As far as I've gone into the story, they move from one place to another, really taking advantage of the big city as it is. And since they hunt demons, this city also gives them a lot of ground to cover.

In this story, we can find 5 main characters. There's Clary, a fifteen-year-old girl with fiery hair and slender figure. Jace, a golden-haired 'lion' that has somewhat of a big mouth. Isabelle, tall and ribbon-slim with long black hair and beauty written all over her. Alec, Isabelle's brother, with the same black hair and tawny, amber eyes. And Simon, Clary's best friend, has dark brown hair, a pair of crooked glasses, and doesn't think of 'party' when fun is mentioned.

Picture
I chose this book because the story seemed interesting and I really liked the movie. Either way, most books are better than the movies they make of them, so I'm hoping this is good.
